Left 4 Dead FPS Config
Left 4 Dead FPS CFG
Welcome to Kaizen’s Left 4 Dead Config! Since I received so much positive feedback when I released my original Counter-Strike config, I decided to do it all over again for Left 4 Dead.
Unfortunately while conducting my research, I found that the Left 4 Dead engine is far more restrictive about custom configs than CSS, so don’t expect this config to turn your single core’d system into a powerhouse. Instead, I tried to focus on gameplay settings, optimized crosshair settings and the like.
Despite the limitations, I feel I managed to strike a good balance between performance and quality.
On the flip side, being less customizable could be seen as a great step for competitive gaming as it helps level the playing field, forcing users into default settings.
With that said, as Left 4 Dead is a relatively new game, this config will likely see many updates, as I discover new ways to make this config absolutely the best possible. Be sure to check back soon.
If you have any suggestions on how to improve this cfg, please let me know in in the Kaizen’s L4D config thread.

Installation | Left 4 Dead CFG
Simply place this file(autoexec.cfg) into your Left 4 Dead folder,
similar to the path below:
SteamSteamAppscommonleft 4 deadleft4deadcfg
Left 4 Dead Command Line Options (set in Steam launch options for L4D)
My recommended settings are..
- -w 800 -console -novid -refresh 120 -heapsize 1572864 -high -noforcemaccel -noforcemparms -noipx -nojoy
However feel free to change or remove -w 800 if you prefer to play at a higher resolution. I only set it low for maximum refresh rates on my CRT monitor.
Modify the heapsize command to match your the amount of RAM you
have in your computer (NOT video card memory!)
- 512MB -heapsize 262144
- 1GB -heapsize 524288
- 2GB -heapsize 1048576
- 3GB(max)-heapsize 1572864
Something else? Grab a calculator and multiply!
(Note going above 3GB will crash L4D because it’s a 32 bit application)
